Windmills like ours, are more than just landmarks; they’re incredible feats of pre-industrial engineering that tell a story about how our ancestors lived and worked.

There is something uniquely captivating about the "heartbeat" of a windmill—the rhythmic clacking of the wooden gears and the sheer power generated by nothing but canvas and a breeze.

It’s easy to forget that before the steam engine changed everything, these were the high-tech hubs of the village. They weren't just buildings; they were sophisticated machines. If we look at the engineering involved, it’s truly impressive what our ancestors achieved:

  • The Post Mill Design: Ashdon windmill is a post mill (the oldest type in Europe), the fact that the entire body of the mill—weighing several tons—rotates on a single central post to face the wind is a staggering feat of balance.

  • Mechanical Synergy: The conversion of horizontal wind power into vertical grinding power through a system of "stone nuts" and "great spur wheels" is a masterclass in physics.

  • Sustainability: Long before "green energy" was a buzzword, these mills were the original zero-emission factories, providing the community’s most vital resource: flour.

Preserving that machinery isn't just about keeping a pretty building standing; it’s about honoring the ingenuity of the people who built it with little more than hand tools and a deep understanding of the elements.

Restoration projects of this scale are expensive and labor-intensive, we rely on the passion of volunteers and the generosity of the community.

We rely on donations whether financial or time, every penny keeps the gears turning. Whether it’s the price of a  coffee or a larger legacy gift, your donation to the Ashdon Village Windmill goes directly into the timber, paint and expertise needed to keep this giant standing. We are a community-funded project, and we truly cannot do this without you.

We will be launching an appeal in 2026 to raise the funds needed to repaint the mill and hopefully refurbish the sails.

Donations can be made directly to us via Kevin Nicholas 07761 633442 or k.nicholas180@gmail.com.
